Understanding Number Lines: Adding, Subtracting, and Comparing Numbers

A number line is a simple, straight line with numbers marked at equal spaces along it. Usually starting at zero, a number line helps us see how numbers are spaced and related to each other. By moving left or right along the line, we can add, subtract, and compare numbers easily. This makes number lines a helpful tool in math, especially for understanding distance, size, and position.

For example, if you start at 2 on the number line and move three spaces to the right, you’ll land on 5, which shows 2 + 3 = 5. Or, if you move two spaces to the left from 7, you reach 5, showing 7 - 2 = 5. Our free downloadable guide provides more examples and practice with number lines, so you can see how they make math problems simpler and more visual.
