Compensation Strategy for Subtraction Made Easy

Subtraction can become a lot simpler with the Compensation Strategy! The trick is to adjust the number you subtract to make it an even ten. Then, after solving, you just "return" or add back what you adjusted. For example, if you need to subtract 38 from 92, round 38 up to 40 by adding 2. Now subtract 92 - 40 = 52, and finally add back the 2 you adjusted, so 52 + 2 = 54. Easy, right?

This strategy is perfect for solving problems quickly and helps you build confidence with subtraction. It also works great for mental math! Want more practice and fun examples? Download our free guide to become a subtraction expert using Compensation!
