Adding and subtracting fractions is like putting pieces of a puzzle together or taking some away. If the fractions have the same bottom number (denominator), it’s simple! Just add or subtract the top numbers (numerators). For example, 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 because the bottom number stays the same. It works the same way for subtraction, like 3/5 - 1/5 = 2/5. Remember, the denominator tells us how many parts the whole is divided into, so it doesn’t change.
If the bottom numbers are different, we first find a common denominator (a number they both share). This lets us turn the fractions into ones with the same bottom number, making it easier to add or subtract.
