Competitions like Math Kangaroo are a unique way to incorporate math into your child's life. Their challenges are unexpected and fun. They contain problems that stretch the mind, present novel opportunities to apply math skills and math thinking, and allow students to use authentic problem-solving strategies.
They are a great way to get recognition in high school and future classes, look great on a college application (regardless of whether you win!), and help learn effective strategies for future timed test scenarios.
We don't strive to make children champions overnight. We provide a solid foundation with a goal to motivate, to involve, and to gain exposure and to practice strategies for application of new reasoning skills. You do not have to be a Math Olympian, but many of our students are inspired to participate in competitions later in the year!
Groups of 3-6 students meet online once a week for 90 minutes.
1. Select grade level by clicking on the appropriate blue tab.
2. Select desired workshop month by clicking on the appropriate yellow/orange tab.
3. Select your preference for a time and date to register, and click the Register button to sign up.
Initially, select the the workshop based on your child's grade level - this is the level at which they be competing.
Workshops are grouped in sets of 4. Register to any number of desired sets. Discount is available for current EMC students.
Please select one day - Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri, Sat, or Sun classes in each set - lessons held on the same week repeat
There are no refunds for missed lessons, however, make-ups and movement between groups is easy.
You can schedule make-ups in any of the available workshops, during any of the following months with prior arrangement. Please give us 24 hr notice.
$50 per weekly class
Learn new problem solving strategies to non-standard problems, while exploring applications of math this summer!
Prior to the workshop, students receive a unique full length practice test designed by our teachers in the style of the nearest upcoming competition.
Students complete the problems and come to class armed with questions.
We ask parents not to help their kids with these problems (as opposed to regular homework). It’s crucial that children read and attempt the problems on their own. This allows them to learn that solving complex problems takes time, and it is NORMAL if the answer is not immediately obvious. Making mistakes and not getting the answer right away is NORMAL and part of the learning process.
Workshops are 1.5 hours long
First part of class - analyze take-home problems (the ones that caused difficulties).
Then spend time on studying completely new problems, different methods for solving them, and discussing strategies.
Last segment - train your test taking muscle. The teacher sets a timer, gives 3-4 problems, and has the children submit their answers independently.
Move away from drills and mechanical algorithms; instead, learn how to solve challenging problems that often have an elegant solution!
Expose your student to a variety of non-standard, non-trivial puzzles and problems often non taught in schools.
Learn test-taking strategies that can be applied to all tests!
Meet other like-minded students who enjoy learning math!
An international math competition open to all students in grades 1 - 12 but particularly popular among elementary school students, the Math Kangaroo offers a variety of non-standard problems that serve as a great introduction to the world of math competitions for young students
The Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC) is a semiannual problem-solving contest for elementary and middle school students. The contest is for students in grades 2-8. The contest is designed to promote students' problem-solving skills and math interest.
As the largest network of local and state math competitions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in the United States and abroad, mathleague.org runs more than 400 contests globally and reaches over 30,000 students each year.
MOEMS® is one of the most influential and fun-filled math competition programs in the United States and throughout the world, with over 120,000 students from every state and 39 countries participating. The objectives of MOEMS® are to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving those problems, and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity.
In the 2023 Math Kangaroo Competition, almost 100 of our students (from around 300 total) participated as part of the EMC team.
A quarter of our EMC Math Kangaroo students scored above the national top 85th percentile.
Over 50% of our students made it into the national top 50th percentile!
