Perfect for trying your hand at various competition math problems in a no pressure enviroment. Keep brains sharp through the summer! In this course, we will learn and practice various approaches to solving non standard problems. Kids will gain confidence and stop being afraid of non-trivial tasks.
Lessons do not follow the traditional one-way lecture format. We don't strive to make children champions in one summer, our task is to motivate, to involve, to gain exposure to different styles of questioning, strategies for solving, and applying various reasoning skills. Many of our summer students are inspired to participate in competitions later in the year!
Classes are stand-alone and do not have to be taken in sequence, allowing for easy scheduling around vacations.
Groups of 3-6 students meet online once a week for 60 minutes.
$210 for the summer. 10% discount is available when also registering for our Fun Math Summer Program.
Summer Session Dates.
Learn new problem solving strategies to non-standard problems, while exploring applications of math this summer!
Each week has a separate “area of focus”, e.g. spatial reasoning, algebraic thinking, counting & combinatorics. Students solve a variety of problems, in different contexts, that utilize the skills in the week’s “area of focus”.
Learn shortcuts and tricks to simplify and solve complex problems.
Learn (timed) test-taking strategies to maximize your score.
Learn how we can use math to help us solve problems related to food, video games, geography, and much more. Math is more than just numbers and equations!
Our Competition Math classes give students practice in common K-8 math competitions such as NOETIC, Math Kangaroo, MOEMS, and AMC8.
Optional homework problem assigned each week.
Each lesson starts with a warm-up puzzle based on logic or math skills.
Students practice solving problems from both “free response” and “multiple choice” types of tests, learning strategies that can be applied in each situation.
Each week as a “focus” topic, with more problems applying skills from that focus area, but maintaining a variety of topics to avoid fatigue and disengagement.
Simulated mini-tests most weeks with timed practice tests in a low-stakes environment.
Move away from drills and mechanical algorithms; instead, learn how to solve challenging problems that often have an elegant solution!
Expose your student to a variety of non-standard, non-trivial puzzles and problems often non taught in schools.
Learn test-taking strategies that can be applied to all tests!
Meet other like-minded students who enjoy learning math!
An international math competition open to all students in grades 1 - 12 but particularly popular among elementary school students, the Math Kangaroo offers a variety of non-standard problems that serve as a great introduction to the world of math competitions for young students
The Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC) is a semiannual problem-solving contest for elementary and middle school students. The contest is for students in grades 2-8. The contest is designed to promote students' problem-solving skills and math interest.
As the largest network of local and state math competitions at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in the United States and abroad, mathleague.org runs more than 400 contests globally and reaches over 30,000 students each year.
MOEMS® is one of the most influential and fun-filled math competition programs in the United States and throughout the world, with over 120,000 students from every state and 39 countries participating. The objectives of MOEMS® are to teach multiple strategies for out-of-the-box problem solving, develop mathematical flexibility in solving those problems, and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity.
In the Spring 2022 NOETIC Competition, almost 100 of our students (from around 300 total) participated as part of the EMC team.
Each EMC team from 2nd to 4th grade has several students that scored 100 %
27 of our students are National Honor Roll medalists, joinng the top 10% of students from all over the USA who participated in the competition this year!
50 of our students made it into the top 50% and received Honorable Mention ribbons!»
We form small groups to pay attention to each student. Classes start in:
